oh dear.
I noticed a report that Apple had released a mobile phone, but have been too frantically busy since clocking back in at work Monday that I have not bothered to check it out.
All I can say is that I'm still a great fan of Nokia (despite or maybe because of owning a SE p910i at the moment - can't wait for for my contract to be up!) but this phone takes the cake. Trust Apple to come up something this sexy. Hot damn, I'm in love. With a phone for Pete's sake!
Phone (with funky touch screen IP phone like functionality), Internet access device, and widescreen iPod rolled into one! Oh and it has a camera too.
Now all I want is to find out mkII comes with WiFi/Bluetooth SIP phone functionality and I'm sold.
that's me finished. and the year is only starting!
UPDATE:
Found my way to Robert Scoble's blog last night (that's the guy who I hear made Microsoft look way less Ogre-like in the eyes of many techs in the software industry by way of his blog) - he has a few sobering comments on the iPhone.
It may well be early days and are we fair to expect Apple to blow Nokia out the park with their very first shot at a phone? I suspect this device and its offspring will gather the same sort of cult following the Mac's have.

Don't you think it's time to start worrying when you wonder about your blog posts in the shower ???

Johann my man... there are times when the quirky turns of that brain of yours worry me! ;)
Seriously though, as Henk points out, there is nothing here from a functionality point of view that has not been done somewhere else. It even lacks certain features.
I'm in need of a new laptop - the one I have is old enough not to have onboard Bluetooth or WiFi. I looked closely at the iMac range and started asking people why they use Mac's... Apart from "being as solid as linux", there were no common specific tangibles I could really flush out. But they ALL (except one who had only converted a few weeks before) said they loved their machines and would not go back.
I'm no Apple fundi, but there is something about the way Apple have designed their user interfaces that lures people in and makes them fanatical fans. I spotted one blog comment somewhere that reckoned that Steve Jobs could make a tea cup look sexy! ;)
If the iPhone is a good phone as well as being all the other nice things it claims, I think it will grow legs. TimP is constantly tempted to physically abuse the excuse for a phone that his fancy PDA is...
In the shower this morning, I realised I should have called this post:
"I phone, you phone, we all phone, but will iPhone knock a Nokia?" (got to be the cheesiest one I've come up with yet!)

I don't think there's anything revolutionary about it. It's essentially a PDA with phone built in. The product itself does nothing new. But it will be bought up by Apple sycophants. I'm surprized that Palm and Blackberry stock dropped. The iPhone is going to do for PDA phones what the iPod did for all MP3 player sales.

Thinking about this again.. I wonder if autistic people (not really into the emotional side) buy Apple products.. maybe they just notice the nice hands of the hand model in the picture (:

Hi Dave, looking further at the phone, with its 5 hour battery life (for videos), 2MP camera - without flash and no GPS, I dont htink its going to hurt NOkia for the time being. Looks cool, but practical? Not at the moment. I agree, more of a cult following until they upgrade the specs.

Hi Johann,
Agreed on all points. I would have thought Apple would integrate WiFi and VoIP from the get go. Will be watching the reviews of this with interest!

Weird how there is no mention of VoIP anywhere.. not in the keynote and not on the Apple site. Also interesting that they partnered with a cellular company.
I think you should not hold your breath about getting one in SA soon..
"Unfortunately for us in South Africa, it may be a while till we get a chance to try out this nifty accessory. iPhone will be available in the US in June 2007, Europe in late 2007, and Asia in 2008"

You could be waiting until 2008 if the Core Group ever feel like importing it and getting ICASA to type approve it.
I must agree, it looks really cool.
GPS and 3MP camera would have been very nice.
